This course, designed by educators for educators, provides K-12 classroom teachers, school support staff, and resettlement agency educators with the resources, knowledge, mindsets, and skills necessary to cultivate academic achievement and ensure wellbeing for refugee, immigrant, multilingual learner/emergent bilingual, and newcomer students. The course includes two components - an online course and four (optional) workshops.

1. The online, asynchronous component of the course is comprised of 7 modules. Through online discussion forums, videos, articles, reflection activities, and application opportunities, educators will:

deepen their understanding of displacement & refugee resettlement
learn strategies to get to know refugee, immigrant, and newcomer students, and apply this growing knowledge to their practice
develop methods for engaging and including family and community members
cultivate culturally relevant and sustaining practices in the classroom
integrate SEL, trauma-informed, and asset-based practices within learning spaces
develop curriculum & enhance instructional strategies to support refugee/immigrant students

2. In addition to the online component, there will be four Saturday workshops throughout the course. These workshops are designed to both deepen and extend the module content by focusing on specific topics/cultural groups (e.g. guest speakers on supporting Ukrainian or Afghan students and families), and by creating opportunities for participants to choose small-group discussions based on their roles, interests, or desire to tackle a particular problem of practice.

Participants sign up for the workshops that fit their schedule and professional learning goals.

Clock Hours/Continuing Education Units

Participants can earn 30 clock hours for successful completion of the online course, and five additional clock hours for each workshop attended.
